英国首相下令全面调查伦敦公寓大火

Theresa May has ordered a full public inquiry into the fire at Grenfell Tower in west London which is feared to have left scores of people dead.

“Right now people want answers and it’s absolutely right. And that’s why I am today ordering a full public inquiry into this disaster,” the prime minister said. “We need to have an explanation of this. We owe that to the families, to the people who have lost loved ones, friends and the homes in which they lived.”

The death toll has risen to 17, with police warning many more may have perished after flames ripped through the 24-storey apartment block in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“We do believe that that number will sadly increase,” Commander Stuart Cundy of the London Metropolitan Police said on Thursday. “Our absolute priority is identifying and locating those people who are still missing.”

Nick Hurd, policing and fire minister, said 65 people had been rescued by emergency services and 28 were in a critical condition.

He stressed that the causes of the blaze were still unknown and advised people not to jump to conclusions.

Pressure had been mounting for a public inquiry into the disaster, with Sadiq Khan, mayor of London, saying that there were “pressing questions, which demand urgent answers”.

Grenfell Tower was built in 1974 but had recently undergone an extensive refurbishment, carried out by architects Studio E and contractor Rydon Construction. The refurbishment, which was finished last year, included new facilities at the base of the building, new windows and a recladding of the fa?ades.
